The ninth Ireon Music Festival is just around the corner, which means three days of awesome live music and parties. This fest – in Samos, Greece from 7 to 9 August – is a crowd-pleaser that brings together new and old talent from across music genres. DJs will be warming up audiences to start off each night and a reggae party rounds off festivities on the final day. Samos – which is a little different to its Aegean island neighbours – is a unique location for a music festival and a great destination on its own.
Ireon used to be a rock festival, but changed its name and guise in recent years as other genres made their mark. Maraveyas Ilegal is on the first day’s programme. The group is the creation of Kostis Maraveyas, a man whose intelligence shines through his music. He sings in Greek, English, Spanish and Italian, swapping one instrument for another as he plays a long list of numbers. He will be followed by Ireon veterans, Mikro, and Covenant the next day. On 9 August, the festival’s stage performances draw to a close with a set from Yiannis Aggelakas; an eclectic collaboration that brings together everything from digital sampling to classical instruments.
As mentioned, fans will be able to end the event in style as the after party kicks off at midnight to the sounds of Kako Synapantima, a nine-member group that have been making reggae music for 15 years. Their music is a social energiser and will carry the concert’s atmosphere into the morning hours.
The island of Samos lies in the eastern Aegean Sea and has two sides to its attractions. Resorts and tourist-centric development occupy the eastern coastline while the west, which is harder to access, has been sheltered from such development and retains much of its own identity. It isn’t just the coastline that is eye-catching, Samos’ interior is forested and beautiful; great for hiking.
The hotels in Samos are spread around the island’s coast, providing access to different regions. For accommodation close to the 2012 Ireon Music Festival, Pythagorion Pountes hotels are not far away. Kerkis Bay Hotel shows a different side to Samos from its inland location.
